What arabianscript.com is
arabianscript.com is a research platform for Arabic and Islamic textual studies: a federated search across manuscript catalogues and a search in texts whose answers are backed, passage by passage, by the place they come from. The platform is free of charge, carries no advertising, has no user accounts and no paywall. It gives no legal or religious advice; it shows what the sources say, and where.
Sources and licences
The platform brings data from other institutions and projects together in one index. Source and licence are shown with every record and every text passage. Where the source names no licence, the record says “not stated”, and nothing is filled in.
Texts
- Open Islamicate Texts Initiative (OpenITI), text corpus release (Zenodo, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3082463): CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. The passages shown are excerpts from this corpus and are made available under the same licence; work, author and OpenITI identifier are given with every passage.
Manuscript records (metadata)
- HMML, Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, vHMML Reading Room (Collegeville, USA): CC BY 4.0
- Qalamos, portal for manuscripts from Asian and African script traditions (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin): mostly CC0 1.0; individual records CC BY 4.0, CC BY-SA 4.0, CC BY-NC 4.0 or Public Domain Mark, as stated with each record
- Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Preußischer Kulturbesitz (OAI-PMH, set “Islamic manuscripts”): Public Domain Mark 1.0 or not stated, as given with each record
- Fihrist, Union Catalogue of Manuscripts from the Islamicate World (United Kingdom): no licence stated by the source
- Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford (IIIF): CC BY-NC 4.0
- Princeton University Library (IIIF): RightsStatements.org “No Known Copyright”
- Cambridge University Library, Cambridge Digital Library (IIIF): rights statement as given in the respective manifest
Digitised images
Digitised images are not mirrored. Every record links to the catalogue entry and, where one exists, to the IIIF manifest of the holding institution; the image is delivered by that institution, not by this site. The only exception are two photographs from the manuscript Wetzstein II 521 (Alf laila wa-laila) of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Public Domain Mark 1.0, which serve as the visual setting of the interface and are labelled with shelfmark, institution and licence.
Fonts and software
Figtree, Source Sans 3, Noto Sans, Noto Sans Arabic and Noto Naskh Arabic are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 and are served from this server. Answers of the answer service are generated with a language model by Anthropic; what is transmitted in the process is described in the privacy notice.
Liability for links
The platform links to catalogues, manifests and pages of other institutions. Each institution is responsible for its own content; we have no influence over it and do not adopt it as our own. If we learn of unlawful content behind a link, we remove the link.
Copyright and database rights
The rights in the sources remain with the institutions and projects named above and are governed by the licences they state. The compilation of the index, the normalisation of spellings and the merging of names are the work of the operator; the index is protected as a database. Any reuse beyond the licences named above requires our consent.
Language versions
This legal notice is available in Arabic, English and German. In case of discrepancies, the English version prevails.
